A Research and Critical Analysis of Mustansar Hussain Tarar’s Historical Novel "Raakh"

Abstract

This research critically analyzes Mustansar Hussain Tarar’s historical novel "Raakh", which is considered one of the most significant historical novels in Urdu literature. The study explores the novel’s themes, narrative style, and character development, emphasizing its reflection on Pakistan’s political, social, cultural, and religious history. Many critics regard Raakh as a representation of Pakistan’s first fifty years, depicting major historical events such as the Partition of India, the 1965 and 1971 wars, and the political turmoil that followed. The novel delves into the psychological impact of historical traumas, illustrating the emotional and ideological struggles of its characters. It presents history not merely as a record of past events but as an ongoing cycle of human suffering and resilience. The research evaluates the novel’s structure and the effectiveness of its symbolic elements, particularly how Raakh (ashes) metaphorically represents destruction, loss, and the remnants of a fading civilization. While many scholars praise the novel for its historical depth and literary excellence, some critique its character development and non-linear narrative.
